If you got here looking for free stuff, this is not free, but carries the potential for being a very low cost solution.
GiffGaff is a well established mobile service provider, it is a largely self help business model created by 02. There is a large community of users/contributors offering support. So one assumes that the business model for GiffGaff is quite efficient if you outsource a lot of the support overhead to the community of users that use the service.
If you make a mobile call from a GiffGaff phone to another GiffGaff phone then the call is free. On this basis if you keep in touch with mobile volunteers then you could significantly reduce the cost of phones by having a mobile in the office to call those in the field.
You do not need an 18 month contract for GiffGaff. It is a pay as you go service with payments made either through pre-purchased credits each month that are available in a number of packages including voice and voice and data, or just data (for iPads for example).
It is possible to just add credit to the phone every few months and still get the benefit of free GiffGaff to GiffGaff calls. This would keep your usage very low (Maybe £5 over 3 months) and still enable you to contact your volunteers in the field.
I have been using GiffGaff for 5 years now, and have not seen any significant issues with the service. The online help can be variable, but you can shop around for answers on their site. It is not very difficult to find a consensus in the list of answers.
If you get one GiffGaff SIM and then open another account for another phone by passing a new SIM to the next phone user you ca receive a credit on the first phone. This helps to propagate phones so is a useful marketing tool for GiffGaff that a charity or CIC could use to their advantage too.
They use the same mobile network as O2. So the coverage is very good for most of the UK.
