I frequently come across situations where a PDF document has been shared, but the owner wishes to edit it because the process has changed or there is something else that needs to be updated on it.
The difficulty is the PDF document has been separated from it’s source document. You cannot easily edit a PDF document. You really need to start in MS Word or some other editor first, make your edits, and then convert it to PDF.
So you don’t have many choices really; acquire a program that will reverse the process and turn it back into a Word Document (you could try this for around £100), or subscribe to Adobe on a monthly basis, which would get quite expensive over time for a small charity, or use an online service.
A free online service
I came across this one which is from the same company that develops the Nitro suite of PDF converters. Go to here: https://www.pdftoword.com/ upload your PDF and they will send you back an MS Word copy of the document.
It is only going to work with documents that were converted from text to PDF. If you try to do this with an image file (an image of a document) then it is not going to work.
Warning
I would advise against converting any sensitive information using this method. They are clearly collecting email addresses, because that is how you get the email back, and you do not know in absolute terms what happens with the PDF or MS Word documents apart from the copy you have.
However, I have used this system to do the odd conversion. I would imagine it is limited in the number of times you can use it in a given period. One tip, if you think you did not get anything back, – check your junk mail folder, it is probably in there.
